Nutrients, such as nitrogen and phospohorous, are key part of delivering food security and sustainable development. However, excess use and inefficient practices leads to nutrient overenrichment, causing soil acidification and groundwater pollution, harmful algal blooms and dead zones in the sea, and loss of coral and sea grass cover. The United Nations Environment Programme is pleased to announce that the Third Intergovernmental Review Meeting (IGR-3) on the Implementation of the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA) will be held in Manila 25-27 January 2012.
Preceding the IGR-3, a Global Conference on Land-Ocean Connections will be organized 23-24 January to discuss emerging issues and science-policy interlinkages, feeding results into the IGR-3.
